Some newbie questions

Hi all.

I find the TreeFold project very interesting, but I have some beginner questions. I have three HP DL380 Gen9 servers with various systems installed via VMware ESXi, and plenty of available resources. I also have several public IP addresses at my disposal.

From what I’ve read, it seems that to participate in the TreeFold project, I need dedicated servers running only Zero-OS and can not be run in virtual environment… Why is that? On the other hand, it’s possible to participate with a Raspberry Pi, which has significantly fewer resources. I don’t fully understand, could someone please explain?

I would be very happy if I can use my servers with virtual environment.

Hi!

Nice to meet you and thanks for showing interest in ThreeFold!!

Z-OS runs on bare metal for optimal security and accessibility to the hardware. TF is not just a protocol-level project, we have a completely innovative operating system (OS) that is based on the Linux kernel.

You can technically run Z-OS on a VM but you won’t get any capacity rewards.

As of now, you can’t run Z-OS on a Raspberry Pi.

It’s great if you have public IP addresses. This can be quite useful on the grid. It could be a good reason for people to deploy on your farm.

When you run 3Nodes, you get proof-of-capacity rewards every month, and you get 50% of the proof-of-utilization revenues.

Let us know if you have more questions.

The manual is a great place to start for new farmers: https://manual.grid.tf/documentation/farmers/farmers.html

@Mik , thank you for your fast response and explanation. I went through the manuals. I understand that Z-OS is for optimal security, but that’s mean I need new server if I would like to participate in TF and get some rewards? Am I correct?

What about docker container? In this example also means that I must take fresh server (bare metal) install some linux and continue with docker container …than I can expect some rewards…if this will run in virtual environment again no rewards althought I share 8 cores, 64GB RAM and 500GB HDD.

Maybe short explanation why no rewards in VM environemnt even if I run Z-OS??

I apologize for the very newbie questions, but I believe that many people will have a clear understanding when they can and what they need to participate in TF.

You can set up ZOS on a VM for testing, but it is meant to be run on bare metal for production.

In short, you need a server that is only used for ZOS if you want to get proof-of-capacity rewards.
If you set up ZOS on a VM you can still get proof-of-utilization rewards, but you won’t get proof-of-capacity rewards. Proof-of-capacity = proof-of-bare-metal-capacity!

I think you could maybe free one of your servers and install Z-OS on this one, then see how you like farming TFT. Or you can just install ZOS in a VM for testing and development.

Also, you can run docker containers on a 3Node.
