GRANT SUGGESTION: Improve network map in the Threefold explorer

About this, i got this in the first place but that doesn’t change any about the locations.

And yes I will add that.

Another quick update:

Dubai. But like I said it’s not too bad. And exact location does not add much to whether I want to use a node or not, uptime, bandwidth, and the previous usage are far more important operational characteristics.

The real value of location lies in being able to pinpoint the country or state (read law) that this node falls under and therefore all the data it processes and holds. For that a few km’s should not be a problem.

But well done like your work. One question: have you looked at / consider using https://www.openstreetmap.org/?

Grid proxy is the simplest way to get a status for nodes. It also returns the time the node was last updated, so you can smooth things out by showing nodes that were online any time in the last day, for example.

Geolocation of IP addresses is more of an art than a science. I took a dive in to learn about it when one of our farmers noticed that the geolocate for their nodes was way off. Turns out we hadn’t updated the database that we use to serve the geolocation info, and those IPs had been reassigned to a different country.

Even when it’s working as intended, we’re using the free version of data offered by one service, so it’s expected to be less accurate than the best that’s available. The coordinates for my old house were surprising close. Currently, it puts me in the wrong city and state entirely.

These data come from the same source, so I would be surprised if the latitude and longitude were ever in a different city than the one reported. We don’t have any better data, it’s just the public IP of the node checked in one free geoip database.

It could be possible to try a different data source if you had the list of IPs available, but these aren’t published anywhere for nodes that don’t have a public config—the only way I know of to query these is to deploy a workload and check from inside the VM.

I just made an update it’s now possible to see hardware of a node and kinds of products. This will benefit most users and farmers when the used rewards proposal (soon) gets thru.

This thread was started in October. We are now mid-December.

I think @teisie’s work is really appreciated amongst the farmers and users communities.
Can the TF community agree to offer a grant for this amazing work?

We are discussing the grants to be given for our community efforts and will be shared with all shortly.

Glad to read this!
If I may add, have a thought for @ParkerS in your discussions.
He did an amazing, to say the least, work in the last couple of weeks.

I use the tools Teis has built on a regular basis

I use his uptime check tool every month as my primary receipt lookup tool.

I use his pricing calculator multiple times a week

As of recently I have been using his map to plan out my new deployments of mirrors for the Threefold cloud project.

While it may seem each of these tools on their own are “small”. The work Teis has put in to not only build these tools but also to often reverse engineer things, will be work that provides the building blocks and the first demonstrations of just how capable the grid truly is.

To that I personally have enjoyed using Teis work and feel that it has significantly improved my personal experience using the grid. I have donated 5,000 tft based on this. I encourage anyone that regularly uses the tools at

http://publicuptime.tfcloud.us/uptimeCheck#

Or the iOS app at

Or the very detailed grid explorer at

https://www.app-yoke.com/explorer.html

To use the stellar address above to also support his work!

Thank you for your dedication and resilience in being a pathfinder for this project Teis!

I love this effort, most of the links are broken though, we should probably see if it makes sense to bring some of this back.

TFCloud is finalizing their funding, see more info about whats happening there, they might be interested to support, more info see https://github.com/threefoldfoundation/info_cloud_production
