At ETHDenver 2025, Melena from Genzio Media sat down with ThreeFold co-founder Florian Fournier to explore how ThreeFold is rebuilding the internet from the ground up.
The conversation was simple, clear, and resonated with anyone who’s ever felt the internet just isn’t working the way it should. When asked, “What is ThreeFold and why does it matter to everyday people?”, Florian gave a super relatable analogy:
“If you think of energy, having one country produce it for another makes no sense–yet that’s exactly how the internet works.”
This is what we are trying to solve. Florian went deeper, explaining that the only way to fix this imbalance is to rethink the internet from the ground up, starting with its physical infrastructure. While many projects focus on protocols or layers built on top of today’s internet, we’re focused on something more foundational: enabling people everywhere to run the internet themselves.
That’s why we’ve made it simple for anyone to set up a node–from a laptop at home to community-run hubs in underserved regions. It’s not just for developers or tech experts; it’s for everyone. Because true decentralization only works if everyone can participate.
He also highlighted a harsh truth: most countries don’t own their internet; they’re plugged into systems controlled by others. We’re here to change that. With ThreeFold, anyone can become both a host and a user, helping to build a more resilient, locally-powered internet that belongs to the people, not a few centralized entities.
Today, we’re live in 52 countries, powered by 60,000+ CPUs and GPUs and 24PB of decentralized storage.
And the journey continues: ThreeFold will co-host this year’s DePIN Summit with EV3 and Share, exploring how decentralized infrastructure can make an impact, focusing on Africa.
