TF Forum, Add 4 Tutorial Main Categories

Hi TFolders,

Here’s a proposition:

Add 4 main tutorial sections to the general categories of the TF Forum, with each section having subsections with specific themes.
Each main section would also include the corresponding FAQ.

The main sections would be:

  • Tutorials: Farmers

  • Tutorials: Users

  • Tutorials: Developers

  • Tutorials: Validators

Rationale: There are already dozens of amazing tutorials but they are everywhere on the TF Forum. It’s hard to find them all.

Those sections would not have any questions, or unrelated contents. It would be only tutorials, and any questions about the tutorials would be in the replies, never in a new post in itself.

When people ask questions on the tutorials, we can improve the tutorials based on the feedbacks.

Once the tutorials are completed and refined, we can vote to get them on the Essential Tutorials of each main tutorial section, and also vote to get them on the Threefold.io Website, in the manuals.

What do you guys think?

@scott I think you have enough admin privilege to add such sections.
Should we do a poll to see what the community thinks?

It’s not a new idea, we talked about the need for some tutorial sections in the TF Forum for a while now.
I think it’s just an improvement in the forum’s organization.

Speak your mind! (The bulk of the idea has been said. The rest is additional/complementary information.)

Just to be very clear, the 4 sections would be accessible there:

The next picture is an example of subsections.

As you can see, it would be very easy to have subsections such as:

Farming - The Basics
Farming - Network (Advanced)
Farming - FAQ
and so on.

The 4 FAQ for farmers, users, developers and validators, would also be available in each corresponding section.

This post is much related to Scott’s post.

Without going into too much details, those two main sections (see below) could be regrouped into a main section “Threefold in non-english languages”.

Rationale: those 2 sections don’t even have subsections, so they could become subsections of the main “non english language” section without any change in their organization!

While I’m there, this section (picture below) is not relevant anymore. The event happened.

Sounds good to me. I don’t think we need a poll to add a category though.

Nice! I want this so much! Thanks for answering my atheist-prayers! Thanks Mik!

I just have a little feedback or mustard to put in.

I think 4 tutorials-cats in the main section will be too much.
How about “Tutorials” or “Knowledge” as main cat and underneath sub-cats (if possible) and then the subsections?

Tutorials->Farm-> [The Basics, Network (Advanced), FAQ]
Tutorials->Users-> [The Basics, Token, Utillization]
Tutorials->Dev-> [a,b,c]
Tutorials->Valid-> [a,b,c]

If this isn’t possible, it would possible to make only one main-cat and then much subsections :

Tutorials-> [Farm - The Basics, Farm - Network (Advanced), Farm - FAQ]
Tutorials-> [Users - The Basics, Users - Token, Users - Utillization]
Tutorials-> [Dev - a, Dev - b, Dev - c]
Tutorials-> [Valid - a, Valid - b, Valid - c]

About the Cat-names and sub-cat-names and how much sub-cats we can talk later I think. For example I don’t know if a own Cat for Validators are necessary, since there is no much discussion and complexity behind.

About the non english cats, i think youre absolutely right!

About the Events, how about a category “Events” and underneath all events are as thread or subcats (if possible)

But Awesome thoughts thanks Mik! lets to that!

Much Needed idea, let’s do it

I think this is important. A forum has an active element to it, therefore the “static” tutorial section should have only comments and suggestion to how the specific tutorial can be improved. And when it is “good enough” migrate to a static site, not forum.

@scott and I had a great talk and we explored the possibilities of using tags in the TF Forum.
Here’s a synthesis of what could be done. Let us know what you think, you Threefolders of the New Internet!

First, an image is worth a 1000 words.
Example of a Discourse-based forum with tags:

(Picture hyperlink)

Note: Ideally, we would have a multiple tags drop-down menu for the TF Forum

The Tags - In Brief

With tags, it is possible to organize and present forum posts in a very effective (and simple) way.
With tags, it is also possible to create specific and custom hyperlink lists.

Ex: you want to see all of the Threefold’s tutorials on farming, but you really do prefer learning with videos.

You could then use the following tags:

  • Farming
  • Tutorial
  • Video

You would then get a list of forum posts corresponding to your search.
You could share this very list via the URL generated: https://forum.threefold.io/search?expanded=true&q=tags%3Afarming%2Ctutorial%2Cvideo

The basic template of such hyperlink would most likely be:
https://forum.threefold.io/search?expanded=true&q=%20tags%3A{tag1}%2C{tag2}

[Work in progress, when the tags will be implemented on the TF Forum, this template might be revised for greater clarity.]

When you create a new post on the TF Forum, you can add tags.
Tags can be added after a post has been written.

Tags - Glossary

Note 1: Each word in italic is a tag

Note 2: Each word in bold is a tag category

    • Farmers
      • create the new internet resource
    • Users
      • use the new internet resource
    • Developers
      • create the framework for the new internet
    • Validators + Stakers
      • invest in the security of the new internet
  • Type of post

    • informational
    • tutorial
    • resources
    • propositions-ideas
    • discussions
    • features
    • interview
    • Q&A
  • Medium of communication

    • audio

    • video

    • picture

    • writing

  • Channel of communication

    • Threefold Official Channels

    • Other social medias

      • Twitter
      • Mastodon
      • Medium
      • Substack
      • Youtube
      • Discord
      • Instagram
      • LinkedIn
      • Reddit
      • Telegram
      • Spotify
  • Duration of post

    • Short
    • Long

Potential Communication Use of Tags

Say you read a very nice post on the TF Forum, and you want to share it. You can share it on, say, substack. Then you would add as a reply to the post the hyperlink leading to your substack mirror post.
Then, the tag “substack” could be added to the TF Forum post.

Then, all the lists with substack as a tag would automatically have this new substack mirror post as a hyperlink!

@gosam

I really like these four (4) categories. I think everyone that I know fits in one of these.

Also - these starting tags look great. Let’s do it!

Great initiatives, @Mik. We’ve agreed to go ahead with tagging on the forum. For now, only our forum leaders have the ability to add new tags into the system, but anyone can apply these tags to their posts going forward.

When I start adding tags to posts, some questions appear.

For example, what would be the tag(s) for a post concerning how to use the Threefold Wallet to store TFT?

Farmers, validators, stakers, users and developers are all concerned here!

I added this to the Tag announce post.

Good point @scott
